How to use Protect PDF well
Protect PDF creates an encrypted copy that requires an open password. You may also set an owner password and choose whether printing, copying or modification are allowed. Protection is useful for controlling casual access during ordinary document sharing, but it is not a substitute for secure recipient verification or a full records-security programme.
How to use this tool
- Upload the PDF and create an open password of at least four characters; a longer unique passphrase is safer.
- Optionally set a different owner password and choose the printing, copying and modification permissions.
- Protect and download the file, test it in a separate PDF reader, then send the password through a different communication channel.
Common uses
- Add access protection to statements sent to a known recipient.
- Limit casual copying or editing of review documents.
- Protect an archive before placing it on removable storage.
- Share draft contracts or internal reports with an additional access barrier.
Privacy and document handling
Encryption is applied temporarily on the PDFTools server. The source and password are used for the requested job and are not retained as a password-recovery service. The source is deleted after processing and the protected output expires. PDFTools cannot recover a forgotten password, so store it securely before closing the page.
Important limitations
PDF permission flags rely on reader software respecting them and should not be treated as absolute digital-rights management. Anyone who knows the open password can view the document, photograph the screen or otherwise reproduce visible information. Protection does not redact hidden content, remove metadata or preserve an existing digital signature. Use a strong password and an appropriate secure delivery method.

Can PDFTools recover my password?
No. Keep a secure record; there is no recovery copy at PDFTools.
Are printing restrictions guaranteed?
No. They depend on the PDF reader and are weaker than encryption of access itself.
